This video discusses how to help ELL students feel like they are in a safe and welcoming learning environment. The video discusses how learning students names, learning a few words in the students native language, displaying students work, and smiling can help ELL students feel included in the classroom. When a student arrives it is important to introduce them to the class and assign them a buddy to help them throughout the class. Creating schedules and class routines will help ELL students adjust to the new classroom a lot easier. If a new student comes into my classroom, I will be sure to introduce them to the class, pair them with a buddy (preferably someone who speaks the same native language as the new student), have a set schedule displayed on the board, and do my best to incorporate the student into my classroom. By incorporating the student into the classroom, they will feel safe and more willing to interact in classroom discussions. I can also label everyday objects in my classroom in English and the students native language. This will be beneficial to the ELL student and general students because both will be learning and practicing different languages.
